It’s not quite a movie tie-in, this year’s reboot of the Mad Max story is coming out several months before the game, and it’s something that as a fan of the original film (particularly the second) I’m looking forward to seeing and playing. What is the game about though? You’d think the idea of a lone man, wracked with anguish and at the loss of his wife and child, driven to violence in a post apocalyptic world where gasoline is currency, would have been obvious game material years ago – apart from the NES game produced by Mindscape in 1990. I’m sure there’s been an influence on the devs and writers for scores of games, but no direct Mad Max title in the last 25 years. Cave Johnson’s tongue in cheek comment from the Portal 2 level creator DLC unfortunately doesn’t count:
“Cave Johnson here. Just a reminder that the core goal of Aperture Gas-Finding Science is to find gas, so make sure you let us know if you see any. If we meet our quarterly gas-finding target, I promise you we will don our bondage gear, fuel our death cars, and drive around in circles, whooping it up and shooting arrows at people. Who is ready to rule the wasteland? All right, start looking.”
Details are starting to come out, and about time too given how long it’s been in development. First up, the amazing people over at Avalanche Studios have been creating it, and who better to work on a vehicle based open world action adventure than the people who bring us the Just Cause franchise. Secondly, it’s a bit tricky to work out what the story will actually be about other than Max has been left for dead after getting The Interceptor stolen. There’s something about Scrotus (a bad guy, not what you’re currently thinking!), fighting marauders, ramming cars , and surviving in the wasteland whilst trying to build the Magnum Opus – the ultimate survival vehicle.
There’ll be crafting for weapons and equipment, and the need to survive through eating and drinking whatever you can rustle up. Environmental cues will give you an idea of what’s in the area, and there’s the promise of open hostile desert that will reward you as much as it tries to kill you. What we can see from the images and videos so far, it’s looking pretty good. However, like all things, until we can get hands on and see how it plays we’re pretty much in the dark. The premise is good, and there’ll be a lot of interest after the movie comes out in May, just a shame until we’re going to have to wait 6 months now. And that it’s out the same day as The Phantom Pain.
Mad Max will be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC on the 1st September this year.
