There’s a new game coming from Volition, the people that brought us the Saints Row and Red Faction series, and it sounds like a natural extension for the studio that’s carved at a niche for over-the-top action adventure games set in an open world. Welcome, Agents of Mayhem.
Agents of M.A.Y.H.E.M. – the Multinational Agency for Hunting Evil Masterminds – is about a team made up of elite Super Agents called together to the city of Seoul in South Korea to fight the forces of L.E.G.I.O.N. – the League of Evil Gentlemen Intent on Obliterating Nations – who are developing a world altering device. Led by Persephone Brimstone, and overly burdened by complex acronyms, the agents will be pitted against all manner of obstacles in an urban battlefield that promises to cover the ground and the rooftops of the sprawling metropolis.
Given that Saints Row IV was pretty much about superheroes, Agents of Mayhem feels on the surface like it might be just a retread of the last full title from the Volition team, but checking out the initial trailer and screens that have surfaced today, we could be in for something more unique that that. I’m particularly liking the cel-shaded aesthetic and the heavy Marvel influence. From the limited character exposure it looks like we’re getting what we’d expect from the developer, distinct archetypes with a strong comedy slant because, face it, it makes things a lot more fun.
Without gameplay to see what the final product is going to be like it’s not easy to say whether this will fill a void in the open world genre, though I’m tempted to take a punt that we’ll see something similar to previous games from the studio… just look at the logo, it smacks of the fleur-de-lis used in Saints Row, as does the colour scheme used at the back end of the trailer. That doesn’t mean it won’t be any good though.
Agents of Mayhem will be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC at some point in 2017, will be rated 18/Mature, and hopefully we’ll be able to bring you more news soon.
